FAQs

How does the Waterfowl Wheel perform?

The Waterfowl Wheel is a robust, purpose-built system designed to move up to 60 decoys while closely mimicking the natural motion of waterfowl on the water. Its unique pulley-and-belt design creates realistic movement throughout your spread, helping bring your decoys to life in a way that attracts attention from distant birds.

How do I set it up?

Assembly typically takes just 5 - 10 minutes out of the box.

Once you've chosen your hunting location, Attach up to three decoy lines to the included main line, add your spreaders and decoys, then secure each line with a 5-foot section of 3/16" bungee cord and an anchor. Once anchored, the Waterfowl Wheel is ready to bring realistic movement to your spread.

How does it create natural motion?

The Waterfowl Wheel's pulley-and-belt system operates in a continuous 4-foot cycle, creating movement throughout your spread. This motion causes individual decoys to move naturally, simulating the subtle swimming and drifting behavior of live waterfowl.

For added versatility, an optional speed controller allows hunters to adjust movement intensity to match changing conditions throughout the hunt.

How many decoys can it move?

We recommend a maximum spread of 60 decoys across three lines for optimal performance and realistic movement.

Is it durable?

Absolutely.

Durability has been a core focus since day one. The Waterfowl Wheel features a rugged steel frame, a custom-built motor, and high-quality belt and pulley components selected specifically for demanding waterfowl hunting conditions.

Every Waterfowl Wheel is proudly made and manufactured in the USA and built to provide years of reliable performance in the field.

How long will a battery last?

Battery life depends on battery size, temperature, and spread configuration.

  • A 50 amp-hour battery typically provides approximately 7+ hours of operation with a 3-line, 60-decoy setup in moderate conditions.
  • In colder temperatures (around 10°F or less), the same battery typically provides approximately 5 hours of operation.

A quality 100 amp-hour deep-cycle battery can power the Waterfowl Wheel through a full day of hunting under most conditions.

Why is it worth the premium price?

Our goal at Obion Outdoors is to build products that last season after season—not products that need frequent replacement.

The Waterfowl Wheel combines premium materials, robust construction, and proven performance to deliver long-term value. It's an investment in reliability, durability, and realistic decoy motion that will continue working hunt after hunt.

As the saying goes: "You get what you pay for."

How does it perform in freezing temperatures?

The Waterfowl Wheel is designed to operate with the front pulley completely submerged in temperatures as low as 25°F.

Because the front idler pulley runs below the water's surface, the submerged pulley, belt, and guide string help reduce ice buildup. The system operates normally until water temperatures reach approximately 25°F.

When temperatures drop below that threshold, ice may begin forming on exposed components. For best performance in freezing conditions, we recommend placing the machine out of the water 1 day prior to extreme freezing temperatures ensuring the entire machine is 12 inches above the water.

Is it made in the USA?

Yes. Every Waterfowl Wheel is proudly manufactured in the USA using high-quality materials and components.

Will it work with my current decoys?

Yes. The Waterfowl Wheel is designed to work with most standard waterfowl decoy setups. No specialized decoys are required.

How much water depth is needed?

The Waterfowl Wheel performs best in shallow to moderate water depths commonly found in flooded timber, marshes, fields, and ponds. Setup can be adjusted to accommodate a variety of hunting environments but most spreaders work best with at least 12 inches of water depth.

Can my retriever safely swim through the spread?

Yes. The system is designed with dog safety in mind. In field testing, retrievers have consistently navigated the spread without issue. The system also has built-in flexibility that allows it to give under tension if contacted by a dog.

How loud is the Waterfowl Wheel?

The Waterfowl Wheel was engineered for quiet operation. Under normal hunting conditions, the sound of wind, water movement, and ambient hunting noise typically masks the operation of the unit. An optional rate controller can make the motor practically silent if desired.

How much weight does the unit add to my setup?

The Waterfowl Wheel is built from durable steel components while remaining portable enough for practical transport and deployment in the field. The Waterfowl Wheel weighs approximately 15 pounds.

Can I control the speed?

Yes. An optional speed controller allows hunters to fine-tune movement based on weather conditions, water conditions, and bird behavior.

What comes in the box?

Each Waterfowl Wheel includes:

  • Waterfowl Wheel unit
  • Belt with main line string, double swivel attachement
  • Setup hardware
  • Instructions
  • John 3:16 sticker

What battery do you recommend?

We recommend a quality deep-cycle marine battery. A 100Ah battery will typically provide all-day operation under most hunting conditions.

Is the battery included?

No. Batteries are sold separately to allow hunters to choose the battery size that best fits their hunting style and runtime needs.

Can I use it in moving water?

Yes. The Waterfowl Wheel can be used in many moving-water environments. Setup may need to be adjusted depending on current speed and conditions.

What happens if vegetation gets caught in the system?

The Waterfowl Wheel is designed to handle normal hunting conditions, but excessive vegetation, sticks, or debris should be cleared periodically to maintain peak performance if front pulley is submerged beneath the water

What warranty does it carry?

The Waterfowl Wheel is backed by a warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. See our warranty policy for complete details.

Why choose the Waterfowl Wheel over a jerk rig?

Traditional jerk rigs create movement primarily at one point in the spread. The Waterfowl Wheel creates continuous motion throughout multiple lines of decoys, producing a more natural and realistic presentation with less manual effort.

Does it work on calm days?

Absolutely. In fact, calm days are often when decoy movement stands out the most. The Waterfowl Wheel helps eliminate the unnatural "frozen spread" look that can occur when there's little or no wind.

What inspired the Waterfowl Wheel?

The Waterfowl Wheel was developed by hunters who wanted a more realistic, reliable way to create motion across an entire decoy spread. After cycles of refinement and field testing, the result is a system designed to deliver natural movement, durability, and simplicity in the field.
